| December 17, 2009 SAN DIEGO - Throughout ones life, we often meet someone whom we say not only “walks the walk, but talks the talk”. Others are pretenders in a world based on what have you done and what are you going to do for me. Then every once in awhile, we run across a person whom not only “walks the walk and talks the talk”, but one who has lived the life and followed their dreams. Well, this is one of those times. Enter Luke Powell of San Diego, California. Powell along with a few select others has become a key player in the forming of a new PROFESSIONAL Baseball League to begin playing in the Southwest in the summer of 2011. Powell, whom started his baseball dream in the Dallas Tigers Baseball Organization as a very young aspiring player has parlayed his abilities into a life of baseball. His accomplishments include playing collegiately at Blinn Junior College in Texas and then moving on to the Professional Leagues. Among Powell’s stops have been stints in The Arizona-Mexico League in ’03, as well as time in the Liga Norte de Sonora with Tecate. Being a left-handed hitting catcher, Powell was a well sought after player whom traveled extensively in the southwest. Now that there is an opportunity for Powell to join an organization whom he describes as, “A group of people that has the same goals and experience to make this work”. He is ready to go full speed ahead in forming a professional baseball team in the El Centro/Tecate area. Having lived there for over six years, Powell is confident that the area is rich with players and the economy and living conditions are condusive to being able to field not only a quality team, but one that the communities can be proud of. In a perfect baseball world, Powell would like to see this become a short season of approximately 60 to 70 games beginning play in mid June after the Major League Baseball draft. By doing so, Powell believes they will be able to pick up a variety of players whom did not get drafted or want to enhance their signability for the free agent market. “There are so many quality players that do not get drafted because of the size of school they came from or due to regional considerations that get lost in the shuffle”. Powell feels that tryout camps all over the southwest would be beneficial to the entire league but would like to hold a tryout also in Puerto Rico and possibly Hawaii. “Again, there are many whom get passed over because they can not afford the airfare to come to the U.S. , or mainland for a tryout”. If experience and living the dream of baseball since you are young is a key ingredient in becoming great at something, Luke Powell has the chance to be one of the fantastic owners of the NEW Professional Baseball League of the Southwest in 2011. |
